2017 Day of Smiles: Hero Smiles
Giving back to our community is in our DNA. On April 10th, we held our second annual Day of Smiles, an event that gathered nearly 130 of our team members to volunteer at 16 different community service projects throughout the city.
As a company, we invest at least 5% of our pre-tax earnings to support nonprofit organizations – and though we support a wide variety of causes, we focus our efforts on three areas: Sharing Smiles, Growing Smiles, and Hero Smiles. Click here to read more about each.
On our Day of Smiles, six of our service projects were focused on “Hero Smiles” with the goal of enhancing the lives of military veterans and their families. Read on to learn more about our volunteer projects!
Veterans Leadership Program of Western Pennsylvania
One of our groups teamed up with Veterans Leadership Program of Western Pennsylvania to pack boxed lunches for vets. VLP provides many services to eligible local veterans, service members, and their families including housing, employment, and other vital support services with the goal of improving their self-sufficiency, sustainability, and quality of life.
Veterans Leadership Program - Project Journey
A branch of the Veterans Leadership Program that another team of our volunteers assisted with was Project Journey, an emergency housing program for female veterans and their families. Our team helped to spruce up the grounds at one of their transitional housing buildings for summer in order to help create a positive environment.
VA Pittsburgh Fisher House
One of our teams made the trip to the VA Pittsburgh Fisher House, located in Oakland, to prepare a tasty lunch for guests and their families. Fisher House provides free lodging to vets and military families receiving treatment at military medical centers, lifting their financial burden and allowing them to focus on their patient.
Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum
A few of our volunteers helped the Curatorial Department at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum prepare for their ”Soldiers & Sailors One-Time Book Sale Event.” The museum constantly receives donated books from the community, which they can then resell and use the funds to help their mission of honoring the men and women of all branches of service.
VA Hospital
At the VA Hospital, our volunteers helped to spread smiles in two different ways. One team helped to assemble and distribute gift bags to patients to help brighten their day. Our other team spent their day in Heroes Hall, to visit with patients and their families and offer them some breakfast pastries and fruit!

2017 Day of Smiles: Sharing Smiles
Our nickname may be “The place for smiles” but we also love creating smiles within our community.
On our Day of Smiles, four of our service projects were focused on “Sharing Smiles” by supporting family wellness and fitness. Read on to learn about how our team spent their day!
Best of the Batch Foundation
A team of our volunteers visited Munhall to help Best of the Batch Foundation, which was established by former Steeler Charlie Batch. They helped to beautify the outdoor area to get it ready for the organization’s spring and summer programming. Charlie even stopped by to personally thank our team members for helping out!
Girls on the Run
We also had volunteers travel to Oakland to help the Girls on the Run staff prepare for their upcoming 5K race by creating team signs and cheer kits. This program inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.
GTECH
A few of our volunteers enjoyed the beautiful weather as they helped GTECH prepare their equipment shed for the busy summer ahead. GTECH helps to improve the social, economic and environmental health of the whole community by ensuring underutilized land serves the greater good.
fitUnited Project RUN
Another team helped with fitUnited’s Project RUN, which helps to reduce the barriers to wellness opportunities in underserved neighborhoods by providing participating children with weekly coaching and bi-weekly nutrition education, leading up to the Kids Marathon in May. Our volunteers helped by wrapping running shoes and creating activity books for the children who participate in this program!

2017 Day of Smiles: Growing Smiles
It’s not a secret that we love giving back to our communities.
On our Day of Smiles, six of our service projects centered around the theme of “Growing Smiles” and providing access to healthy food and education about food choices. Read on to learn more about these great projects!
412 Food Rescue
A few of our volunteers spent the day with 412 Food Rescue, an organization that provides reusable pans to their partner restaurants who donate their leftover food at the end of the day. Our volunteers helped to make these pans identifiable and deliver them to their respective locations!
Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank
One group of volunteers headed to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank in Duquesne to help repack food for those in need. The Food Bank distributes 2.2 million pounds of groceries a month – a feat that could never be accomplished without the hard work of volunteers!
Squirrel Hill Food Pantry
Some of our team members headed to the Squirrel Hill Food Pantry to help restock their inventory with new spice mixes and other goods. The pantry mixes all of the spices themselves from curry to barbeque! You can just call this group the spice girls!
Grow Pittsburgh – Braddock Farms
Another group went to volunteer at Grow Pittsburgh’s Braddock Farms location. Braddock is a food desert and this farm is the community’s single source of fresh produce during the growing season. By the end of the day, our team was weeding and planting experts!
Rainbow Kitchen
We also partnered with Rainbow Kitchen in Homestead, PA, which helps to improve the quality of life for low-income families through programs that address hunger, child nutrition and supportive services. Our volunteers helped out in the food pantry to repack food items for redistribution to individuals in need.
Big Brothers Big Sisters
Lastly, our team helped to “Grow Smiles” by packing snack packs for students in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. Each pack was full of nutritious snacks for each child so they can enjoy a healthy bite during the weekend, when they cannot rely on school feeding programs.
