2015 Volunteer of the Year

Giving back to our communities is one of the fundamental pillars of our company culture. We know the importance and value of taking care of people both inside and outside our facilities.

Many of our team members are active volunteers in their neighborhoods, and we do what we can to support them in those endeavors. During the months of April and May, we recognize those who have gone above and beyond by generously giving their time and energy to support causes in their local communities.

From over 1,000 team members who volunteered over 30,000 hours of their time in 2015, we’re proud to announce that this year’s Eat’n Park Hospitality Group Volunteer of the Year is Jamie Moore!

Pictured above: Jennifer Flanagan, Executive Director and Founder of Project Lunch Tray, a project under Community Kitchen Pittsburgh, and Jamie Moore, 2015 Volunteer of the Year Winner.

Jamie, our  Director of Sourcing and Sustainability, has been an ENPHG team member for 15 years. Jamie is extremely passionate about food and that passion is reflected through his volunteer efforts.  He has volunteered with Slow Food Pittsburgh, HEARTH, Grow Pittsburgh, and countless others. Jamie has an extensive and meaningful involvement with organizations that connect people with food; including cooking, gardening and educating.

In Jamie’s honor, Eat’n Park Hospitality Group will be donating $1,500 to Jamie’s charity of choice, Community Kitchen Pittsburgh. Founded in 2013, this organization’s mission is to use food as the foundation to change lives and strengthen communities. They achieve this through their work with workforce development, community-engaged social enterprise, and food waste reduction. Jamie volunteers with many of their initiatives, including Project Lunch Tray, a cooking competition encouraging and inspiring kids to think outside the typical lunch box food and advocate for better school food.

Please join us in congratulating Jamie and our other finalists for their extensive efforts in the community!

2015 Volunteer of the Year finalists:
  • Tim Fetter (Duquesne University)
  • Jenna Foster (Franklin Park)
  • Tammy Gress (Johnstown)
  • JJ Hartin (Monroeville
  • Mary McCoy (Banksville) – Honorable Mention
  • Jamie Moore (Corporate Support Center) - Winner

Day of Smiles: Growing Smiles

It’s not a secret that we love giving back to our communities. On April 29th, we held our first ever Day of Smiles, an event that gathered nearly 100 of our team members to volunteer at 10 different community service projects throughout the city.

As a company, we invest at least 5% of our pre-tax earnings to support nonprofit organizations – and though we support a wide variety of causes, we focus our efforts on three areas:  Sharing Smiles, Growing Smiles, and Hero Smiles. Click here to read more about each.

On our Day of Smiles, four of our service projects centered around the theme of “Growing Smiles” and providing access to healthy food and education about food choices. Read on to learn more about these great projects!

Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank

One group of volunteers headed to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank in Duquesne to help repack food for those in need. This food bank does incredible work at distributing directly to individuals in need and to community agencies for redistribution across nearly a dozen counties in our region.

Grow Pittsburgh

Another group went to volunteer at Grow Pittsburgh’s Braddock Farms location. Braddock is a food desert and this farm is Braddock’s single source of fresh produce during the growing season. By the end of the day, our team were weeding and planting experts!

fitUnited

For this community service-filled day, we also partnered with the United Way to help with their fitUnited program. Through this program, our team members helped to deliver meals to young children in Braddock. These kids are too young to receive free or reduced meals at school and their families need the extra help.

Big Brothers Big Sisters

Lastly, our team helped to “Grow Smiles” by packing “Share a Smile” snack packs for students in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. Each pack was full of nutritious weekend snacks for each kid, plus, we gave them an extra to share with a friend or sibling.

Day of Smiles: Sharing Smiles

Our nickname may be “The place for smiles” but we also love creating smiles within our community.

On our Day of Smiles, three of our service projects were focused on “Sharing Smiles” by supporting family wellness and fitness. Read on to learn about how our team spent their day!

Best of the Batch Foundation

A team of our volunteers visited Munhall to help with Best of the Batch Foundation, which was established by former Steeler Charlie Batch. They helped to get ready for two of their summer programs: CHUCK and Next Level Athletics Track Club. Charlie even stopped by to personally thank our team members for helping out!

Dick’s Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon

An event that the city looks forward to every year is Pittsburgh Marathon weekend. Throughout the event, more than 30,000 people of all ages and physical activity levels hit the pavement as participants in everything from 50-yard Tot Trot, to the 1 mile Kids’ Marathon to the 26.2-mile full marathon. The fun kicked off at the runner’s expo, where our team of volunteers helped runners to get registered.

Girls on the Run

We also had volunteers travel to Oakland to help the Girls on the Run staff prepare for their upcoming 5K race. This program inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. We annually make a donation to help provide scholarships for low-income students to participate in this life-changing program.

Day of Smiles: Hero Smiles

Giving back to our community is in our DNA.

On our Day of Smiles, three of our service projects were focused on “Hero Smiles” with the goal of enhancing the lives of military veterans and their families. Read on to learn more about our volunteer projects!

Veterans Leadership Program of Western Pennsylvania

One of our groups teamed up with Veterans Leadership Program of Western Pennsylvania to pack meals for senior and disabled vets. VLP provides many services to eligible local veterans, service members, and their families including housing, employment, and other vital support services with the goal of improving their self-sufficiency, sustainability, and quality of life.

VLP’s Project Journey

A branch of the Veterans Leadership Program that a team of our volunteers assisted with was Project Journey, an emergency housing program located in the South Side for female veterans and their families. Our team helped to spruce up the grounds for summer in order to help create a positive environment.

VA Pittsburgh Fisher House

Our final team made the trip to the VA Pittsburgh Fisher House, located in Oakland, to prepare a tasty lunch for guests and their families. Fisher House provides free or low cost lodging to vets and military families receiving treatment at military medical centers.
