2018 Day of Smiles: Growing Smiles

It’s not a secret that we love giving back to our communities. On April 11th, we held our Third Annual Day of Smiles, an event that gathered over 150 of our team members to volunteer at 12 different community service projects throughout the city.

As a company, we invest at least 5% of our pre-tax earnings to support nonprofit organizations – and though we support a wide variety of causes, we focus our efforts on three areas:  Sharing Smiles, Growing Smiles, and Hero Smiles. Click here to read more about each.

On Day of Smiles, 3 of our service projects centered around the theme of “Growing Smiles” and providing access to healthy food and education about food choices. Read on to learn more about these great projects!

412 Food Rescue

A few of our volunteers spent the day with 412 Food Rescue, an organization that aims to prevent perfectly good food from entering the waste stream. Our volunteers helped to prepare supplies for their Hidden Harvest program, which gleans fruit and vegetables from public and privately-owned trees, orchards, farms, and gardens to provide fresh food options for nonprofits and the people they serve!

Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank

One group of volunteers headed to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank in Duquesne to help repack food for those in need. The Food Bank distributes 2.2 million pounds of groceries a month – a feat that could never be accomplished without the hard work of volunteers!

Grow Pittsburgh – Braddock Farms

Another group went to volunteer at Grow Pittsburgh’s Braddock Farms location. Braddock is a food desert and this farm is the community’s single source of fresh produce during the growing season. By the end of the day, our team was weeding and planting experts!

2018 Day of Smiles: Sharing Smiles

Our nickname may be “The Place For Smiles” but we also love creating smiles within our community.

On Day of Smiles, 5 of our service projects were focused on “Sharing Smiles” by supporting family wellness and fitness. Read on to learn about how our team spent their day!

Best of the Batch Foundation

A team of our volunteers visited Munhall to help the Best of the Batch Foundation, which was established by former Steeler, Charlie Batch. They helped to beautify the outdoor area to get it ready for the organization’s spring and summer programming. Charlie even stopped by to personally thank our team members for helping out!

The First Tee of Pittsburgh

Fore! One of our volunteer teams helped to beautify the golf course at The First Tee of Pittsburgh, an organization that helps to build character, instills life-enhancing values, and promotes healthy choices to young people through the game of golf.

Girls on the Run

This group of creative volunteers helped the Girls on the Run team prepare for their Shoe Giveaway. They also decorated snack bags and created motivational cards for the program. Girls on the Run helps to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum that creatively integrates running.

GTECH

A few of our volunteers helped GTECH clean-up a vacant lot in Homewood, which will eventually transform into a greenspace for the community! GTECH helps to improve the social, economic and environmental health of the whole community by ensuring underutilized land serves the greater good.

Sarah Heinz House

Another one of our volunteer teams headed to the Sarah Heinz House, where they helped to clean and spruce up the campus for the spring season! With a focus on character, service, and leadership, Sarah Heinz House provides enriching programs where kids learn to make healthy choices while participating in fun, challenging activities.

2018 Day of Smiles: Hero Smiles

Giving back to our community is in our DNA. On April 11th, we held our Third Annual Day of Smiles, an event that gathered over 150 of our team members to volunteer at 12 different community service projects around Pittsburgh.

As a company, we invest at least 5% of our pre-tax earnings to support nonprofit organizations – and though we support a wide variety of causes, we focus our efforts on three areas:  Sharing Smiles, Growing Smiles, and Hero Smiles.  Click here to read more about each.

On Day of Smiles, 4 of our service projects were focused on “Hero Smiles” with the goal of enhancing the lives of military veterans and their families. Read on to learn more about these volunteer projects!

The Fisher House

One of our teams made the trip to the Fisher House, located in Oakland, to prepare a tasty lunch for guests and their families. Since 2012, the Fisher House has been providing a "home away from home" for the families of Veterans and active duty military who are hospitalized. The home, with its 10 suites, allows families to be near their loved one while enjoying a place of peace and respite for themselves. Families stay for free, lifting their financial burden and allowing them to focus on their patient.

VA Hospital

This crew of volunteers were hard at work assembling care package kits, which were then distributed to well-deserving veterans receiving medical care at the VA Hospital in Oakland. Some veterans stay at the hospital for extended periods of time, so the kits were full of supplies that they may not have had the opportunity to pick up for themselves.

Veterans Leadership Program

A few of our volunteers teamed up with Veterans Leadership Program of Western Pennsylvania for two different volunteer projects, including packing and delivering lunches to Veterans enrolled in the program as well as assisting with some administrative tasks at the VLP’s main office! VLP provides many services to eligible local veterans, service members, and their families including housing, employment, and other vital support services with the goal of improving their self-sufficiency, sustainability, and quality of life.

2018 Volunteer of the Year

Giving back to our communities is one of the fundamental pillars of our company culture. We know the importance and value of taking care of people both inside and outside our restaurants.

Many of our team members are active volunteers in their neighborhoods, and we do what we can to support them in those endeavors. During the months of April and May, we recognize those who have gone above and beyond by generously giving their time and energy to support causes in their local communities.

From over 1,100 team members who volunteered over 42,000 hours of their time in 2017, we’re proud to announce that this year’s Eat’n Park Hospitality Group Volunteer of the Year is Mickey Ivosevic!

Mickey, a team member at our Cranberry Eat’n Park restaurant, is passionate about recruiting her colleagues at work to volunteer at various Eat’n Park Hospitality Group hosted events throughout the year. Outside of work, her true life’s purpose is helping women recover from drug and alcohol addiction. Specifically, she volunteers with the women at the Aliquippa Jail and at Pennsylvania Organization for Women in Early Recovery (P.O.W.E.R.). She plans holiday celebrations and cookouts, and always brings with her a message of hope and encouragement. She pours her heart into helping the women reclaim their lives and reunite with their families. On Mickey’s behalf, Eat’n Park Hospitality Group will be donating $1,500 to P.O.W.E.R..

Please join us in congratulating Mickey and our other finalists for their extensive efforts in the community!
