Evolution of Eat'n Park Desserts
Can you imagine life without Eat’n Park desserts? It’s just not as sweet (or delicious)! For decades, we've been honored to be your dessert destination after high school football games, movies, shows, and more!
And our desserts have evolved over the years, starting with our Strawberry Pie that our founder’s daughter, Claire Moore, perfected in her Scott Township kitchen in 1954!
Filled with two pints of strawberries, Strawberry Pie was monumental for a variety of reasons, but one of them includes Eat’n Park being one of the first places to ever receive fresh strawberries by air freight. In 1962, the Strawberry Pie was served in the winter by shipping strawberries from Plant City, Florida.

Team Smiley 2024, Signing off!
Hello, everyone! Team Smiley 2024 is officially signing off!
This summer was filled with countless smiles, laughs, and memories. Thank you for keeping up with us on Team Smiley’s Instagram @enpteamsmiley! These past few months have been such an amazing experience, and this internship is one that is truly unlike any other.
With over 1,300 miles traveled (about half the width of the United States), 34,000 Smiley Cookies distributed, and an infinite amount of Smiles shared, we have certainly kept ourselves busy! Every single event we traveled to had an impact on our community in a special way, and we wouldn’t trade it for the world! The amount of people we met at new places we discovered in the Pittsburgh area is something we will carry with us in our careers!
With countless memories and lessons learned, here are a few of our most invaluable takeaways from our Team Smiley 2024 experience!
Seeing your smiling faces when receiving or decorating a Smiley Cookie is an image we will never leave behind! Knowing we brought so many people happiness touched our hearts.
Being on Team Smiley this summer was also extra special because we were able to contribute to the 75th anniversary celebrations! We brought the Cookie Cruiser to special 75th anniversary partnerships, including the Eat’n Park takeover at the Pirates Game, the Heinz History Center Kids Free weekend, and the Carnegie Science Center’s new Pixar exhibit sponsored by Eat’n Park. The celebrations never stopped all summer, and we were so glad to play a part in creating Smiles!
We were so appreciative of Eat’n Park Hospitality Group for giving us the opportunity to work both in and out of the office. This internship meant so much more than being stuck behind a desk because of our ability to work independently at our Cookie Cruiser events.
Continuing this gratefulness, our Cookie Cruiser events brought us even closer to our hometown, Pittsburgh, PA. As we traveled with cookies and smiles across the region, we discovered the city has a lot of wonderful qualities, more than we ever knew! Without our internship with Eat’n Park, we might have never reignited our passion for the City of Pittsburgh!
Last, but certainly not least, we are taking our friendship far beyond our Team Smiley internship days. Spending the summer together created some of the best memories we've ever had! Without our camaraderie and strong connection, this internship might not have been as unbelievably successful and rewarding. Our greatest advice to future Team Smiley interns is to appreciate those around you and make genuine connections whenever the opportunity presents itself. Making memories is one thing but making them with your best friends is the greatest feeling in the world.
Thank you all for following along with us this summer!
Team Smiley 2024 Signing Off! Eat’n Park forever!

Every Kid Leaves with a Free Smiley Cookie
It’s a tradition that dates back to 1986! Yep, every kid leaves with a FREE Smiley Cookie — the perfect treat to cap off an Eat’n Park visit!
History of Smiley Cookie
For more than 50 years, the bakers at Warner’s Bakery would awaken Titusville residents, like a little boy named Jim Broadhurst, with the sweet smell of morning pastries, including a special sugar cookie adorned with a colorful, smiling face. Jim would grow up to become CEO of Eat’n Park Restaurants, but he never forgot about that cookie.
In 1986, with the blessing of Ellsworth Warner at Warner’s Bakery, Jim obtained the rights for Eat’n Park to create a Smiley Cookie inspired by the Warner’s Bakery cookie, without being an exact replica. Jim wanted guests of all ages to experience the sweet, simple taste of his go-to childhood snack. From then on, all Eat’n Park restaurants would serve Smiley Cookies and all children would receive a free Smile with their meal.

History of Eat’n Park’s Salad Bar
In 1978, nearly 30 years after Eat’n Park opened as a carhop, the family restaurant introduced another game-changing dining trend: The salad bar.
Now, guests could create their very own salad meal just the way they like it!
Eat’n Park’s salad bar has evolved over the years, adding different ingredients and items to the spread. Today, in addition to salad fixings, the salad bar has become a spot where guests can also enjoy freshly sliced fruit and savory soups, including daily Chicken Noodle Soup, Chili, and the Soup of the Day.
Not only was Eat’n Park’s salad bar ahead of the health craze of the 1980s, but the family restaurant was also way ahead of the customization trend of today, with guests’ desire to hand select and build their own meals.

Partnership Spotlight: Eat’n Park’s Relationship with UPMC Children’s Hospital Foundation: “A Powerful Force for Positive Change”
Eat’n Park Hospitality Group gives back to the community in many ways, and one of its longest-running partnerships is with UPMC Children’s Hospital Foundation.
Since 1979, Eat’n Park’s Caring for Kids’ campaign has raised more than $12 million for area children’s hospitals and features a unique intersection of team members and guests working together to raise money during the holiday season.
“Eat’n Park is incredibly thoughtful and compassionate in the way they not only engage the community, but also in the way their team members embrace giving back,” says Rachel A. Petrucelli, President, UPMC Children's Hospital Foundation. “Because Eat'n Park invests in and empowers their teams, their people take great ownership in the Caring for Kids campaign, which extends far beyond financial contributions. Eat’n Park’s commitment to both fundraising and community service creates a powerful force for positive change, touching lives in a multitude of ways.”
The money Caring for Kids raises benefits patients and their families every day, channeling the funds into vital healthcare initiatives, including free and uncompensated care to families in need. But Petrucelli says it’s more than just raising money that makes Eat’n Park a special organization to work with.
“Eat’n Park’s active involvement with guests and community members fosters a sense of togetherness. Through events, fundraisers, and volunteering efforts, they create a network of support that transcends monetary contributions. Families, loyal customers, and community members actively participate, feeling empowered to make a difference, together.”
In 2009, Eat’n Park Hospitality Group took their relationship with UPMC Children’s Hospital to the next level with the construction of the Eat’n Park Atrium on the 6th floor of UPMC Children’s.
“The Eat’n Park Atrium serves as host to everything from celebrity and athlete visits, to trick-or-treat activities, to blood drives and the annual KDKA Free Care Fund Telethon. Because of Eat’n Park and the Caring for Kids campaign, the Atrium provides space for kids to truly feel like kids, despite being inside a hospital.”
Petrucelli says that UPMC Children’s has been a fortunate beneficiary of the exemplary culture of philanthropy created by Suzy and Jim Broadhurst, a legacy that is carried forward by their children, Chairman and CEO Jeff Broadhurst, Vice President of Food Systems Transportation Brooks Broadhurst, and President and COO of the Parkhurst Division Mark Broadhurst.
“It is their leadership that has prioritized community partnerships like the one they hold with us, and the other charities they support. Their kindness has helped inspire others and provided life-saving care for our kids. We are honored to be a recipient of their unyielding compassion. The commitment to serving kids in our community runs deep for the Broadhurst family and the Foundation, and UPMC Children’s has certainly benefited.”
There are many reasons why UPMC Children’s Hospital is a top healthcare facility, and Petrucelli believes one of them has to do with their partnership with Eat’n Park.
“Because of committed friends like Eat’n Park, UPMC Children’s has been able to maintain its position as a top 10 children’s hospital, providing life-saving care to more than 1.5 million children from all over the nation and the world. What a gift to have such industry-leading care for our kids in our own backyard.”

Evolution of Eat’n Park Takeout
While takeout might seem like modern conveniences, it’s something Eat’n Park has been doing since day one in 1949 when we were a carhop!
Guests would order their food from our first location at Saw Mill Run Boulevard in the South Hills, and our servers would bring it out to their cars.
Since then, Eat’n Park takeout has evolved. In the early 2000s, we introduced Pickup Windows to our Eat’n Park locations and today we have more than 50 windows as an added convenience for both guests and team members.
We’ve also streamlined takeout with mobile ordering. While you can still call your local Eat’n Park to place an order to go, you can also use our mobile app and select one of three options: our Pickup Window (most locations), lobby shelf, or curbside pickup.
Yep, 75 years later, we’re still bringing out food to people’s cars! While our takeout has evolved, in many ways, it harkens back to our carhop roots.
In addition to being a dine-in destination, we love being a takeout location for families on the go!

Partner Spotlight: How Eat’n Park and United Way Create Change in the Community
Did you know Eat’n Park’s relationship with United Way dates back nearly three decades?
“Jim and Suzy [Broadhurst] served as United Way campaign chairs in the ‘90s, and that was just the beginning of a relationship that has had such a positive impact on our region,” says Bobbi Watt Geer, PhD, President & CEO, United Way of Southwestern PA.
At Eat’n Park, “Creating a Smile” means more than just a dining experience. It’s having an impact in the community in areas like food insecurity and helping families meet their basic needs every day, like through United Way’s 24/7/365 human services referral system, 211.
“A good partner is one who is consistently present and supportive in the ways the moment calls for,” continues Watt Geer. “When I consider the many ways Eat'n Park has worked with United Way to better serve the community, I am struck by the consistency, legacy, and commitment to creating and expanding goodness in people's lives.”
While Eat’n Park and United Way have been great partners for many years, the pandemic highlighted the importance of this connection and how it can directly impact local lives. As the United Way was faced with unanticipated urgent issues, one that quickly emerged was how students were going to access food without school breakfasts and lunches, and Eat’n Park had a solution.
“Brooks Broadhurst and the team at Eat'n Park were already thinking about this issue when they approached PNC Foundation and United Way to develop a network that would deliver meals to families,” said Watt Geer. “This idea blossomed into the Student and Family Food Program that engaged Eat'n Park and a number of other foodservice providers to deliver more than 1.5 million meals over the first two years of the pandemic. That's being a good neighbor and playing your part in making the region a better place to live."

Hi, everyone! My name is Katie, and I live about 30 minutes outside of Pittsburgh. I am a rising senior at University of Alabama, in the Honors College and studying Public Relations and Business. I love all things nature, being with friends, and working out at the gym. In my natural element, you can probably find me listening to my favorite music with an iced coffee in my hand. My order at Eat’n Park tends to be something sweet, whether it's a Smiley Belgian Waffle or Grilled Stickies. A Message from our Chairman & CEO, Jeff Broadhurst
The year was 1949.
“Riders in the Sky (A Cowboy Legend)” was at the top of the music charts. The Stratton Story starring Indiana, Pa.’s own Jimmy Stewart was the No. 1 film. And restauranteur Larry Hatch was about to do something extraordinary...he just didn’t know it yet.
On June 5, 1949, Hatch introduced Pittsburgh to its first “Come as You Are, Eat In Your Car” experience known as “Eat’n Park,” located in a tiny, two-tone yellow, 13-seat restaurant in the South Hills. The restaurant opened at 2 PM that day, and soon guests rushed the Saw Mill Run Boulevard location, causing a traffic jam on Route 51. By 8 PM, the restaurant was out of food, with just hours to spare before they had to do it all over again the next day.
And that’s just what Larry Hatch and his resilient team did.
Guarded with a willingness to listen and anticipate guests’ needs, they opened and set out to make a better tomorrow. While my father, former Chairman and CEO Jim Broadhurst, wouldn’t introduce the Smiley Cookie for another 37 years, the desire to Create a Smile has always been there, even on that opening day.
Today, Eat’n Park celebrates its 75th anniversary, and we wouldn’t be here without our community. While we specialize in food, our restaurants start with people. That’s what’s kept us in business for more than seven decades.
Just like our Sauce Supreme adds something extra special to our Superburger, the same can be said for our incredible team members and the guests we serve. Our team members have been willing to take risks and try new ideas with us, all while creating Smiles, and you, our guests, have stood by us and become our family. We’re who we are today because of the Pittsburgh community who took a chance on us on Saw Mill Run Boulevard all those years ago.
As we’ve evolved and grown, Eat’n Park memories look different for each generation, and I can’t wait to see what new ones will take shape.
Thank you for 75 years. We look forward to spreading Smiles for 75 more!
Jeff

All the Ways to Buffet Leading Up to Mother’s Day
Mom deserves the world, right? And while that may be too big to wrap, another way to give her everything she wants is to take her to an Eat’n Park buffet!
Here are all the ways to buffet leading up to Mother’s Day.
Take her to our Salad Bar
Customize your very own soup, salad, and fruit meal? Yep! She can pile her plate high with broccoli salad, pasta salad, or she could even build her very own veggie salad. Plus, she can fill her dish with peaches, our iconic pistachio pudding, mini muffins, and more! And don’t forget a cup of Chicken Noodle Soup, our Soup of the Day, or Chili. Our salad bar opens weekdays at 11 AM, 12 PM on Saturday, and 3 PM on Sunday.
Take her to the Saturday Breakfast Buffet
“Eat your breakfast,” Mom would always say. Now you can treat her to ALL the breakfast at our Saturday Breakfast Buffet until 11 AM, where we serve potato pancakes, French toast, waffles, sausage, and more.
Take her to the Sunday Brunch Buffet
Chicken and biscuits, pierogies, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and more? We really like to go all out with our Sunday Brunch Buffet from 9 AM to 2 PM, and it’s the perfect spot to take Mom to on Mother’s Day. Add a Strawberry Pie to go for her to enjoy later!
