Caring For Kids Results & Car Winner!

The results are in!  Our team members have wrapped up our annual Caring for Kids campaign, with results that are nothing short of amazing.

In a mere five weeks, we raised...

$403,256!

No words can express our gratitude to all of the guests and team members who opened their wallets and their hearts for such a great cause. This campaign truly makes a difference in the lives of local children who are being treated at these hospitals.

The following hospitals benefited from this year’s campaign:

    • Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC
    •
Akron Children’s Hospital of the Mahoning Valley
    • Children’s Medical Center of Akron
    • Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia
    • Columbus Children’s Hospital Foundation
    • DuBois Regional Medical Center
    • Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Hershey Medical Center
    • Geisinger Health System
    • Indiana Regional Medical Center
    • Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital
    • St. Vincent Health System
    • University of Virginia Children’s Hospital
    • West Virginia University Children’s Hospital

Of course, Caring for Kids wouldn’t be nearly so successful without the generous contributions of our partners. The Neighborhood Ford Store once again donated a car – a 2014 Ford Fusion – to be raffled off to one lucky winner. George Seckar of Lower Burrell, PA got a special holiday surprise on Wednesday when his ticket was drawn by a patient at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. Congratulations, George!

Other partners who made significant contributions to the campaign include:

    •
Sheetz, Inc.
    • Nestle Professional Vitality
    • Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
    • KDKA Radio
    • KDKA-TV

Thank you for your support!

FarmSource Spotlight - Parma Sausage

Though local produce has run its course for the season, our FarmSource program continues year-round thanks to partnerships with local farms, dairies, and artisan producers. This year, I'd like to introduce you to some of those partners.

First though, a refresher on our FarmSource program is probably in order. Simply put, FarmSource is the local purchasing program that we started in 2002.  The program supports four segments, which we define as follows:

  • Produce - Sourced within 150 miles from our local distributors. We selected these growers through farmer based organizations that assisted in the outreach of many of these growers.
  • Dairy - Sourced within 150 miles from the milk processing facility. These dairies are independently owned and operated by farm families that choose not to treat their herds with rBGH (bovine growth hormone).
  • Meat - Regional (located within the state or within a three hour drive) meat producers. These facilities are USDA inspected and source their animals from farms that are within a three hour drive from the processing facility.
  • Artisan - These producers devote their time, energy and passion to a limited line of products. Often these producers have a single product line, produced at a single facility.  These companies range from a local hearth-baked bread company to a neighborhood ethnic sausage manufacturer.

You might be surprised to learn how many local products are used throughout our menu. I'll be focusing my next series of blogs on the Artisan producers that we support – starting with Parma Sausage.

Parma Sausage is a meat distributor located in the Strip District of Pittsburgh.

The company was founded by the late Luigi Spinabelli, who passed the family business down to his daughter and so-in-law, Rina and John Edwards. When we first started working with them, 10 years ago, we dealt primarily with Rina and John, and over the last 5 years, their children have slowly starting to trickle back into the family business. I'm proud that we're working with such a passionate and homegrown business like Parma Sausage.

Our current menu has two Parma Sausage products: Capicola and Chorizo Sausage. The Capicola is used on our Italian Breakfast Club sandwich and the Chorizo is used in our Breakfast Burrito. I had a chance to talk with our Executive Chef of Menu Development, John Frick, and he said, "The menu items featuring Parma's products are quite popular, and we looking to incorporate their offerings in more ways. Because Parma's products are also available to the public from their store in the Strip District, I have the pleasure of enjoying them not only at Eat'n Park, but also at home. Click here for my Italian Grinder Recipe. It's a hit at every tailgate party!

Until next time,
Jamie

Bonus Cards Are Back!

The holidays are here, and if you are like me, you're trying to find the perfect gift for everyone on your list. You've got the mailman, the babysitter, the teacher…what to buy for those folks for whom you want to show appreciation, but have no idea what their tastes are? Don't fret – everyone loves Eat'n Park gift cards!

And for a limited time, you'll get a FREE $5 bonus card* with every $25 in Eat'n Park gift card purchases at our restaurants. It's like a reward for being such a great gift-giver! Bonus cards are valid from January 1 through March 31, 2014. Once the hustle and bustle of the holidays is over, you'll have a little treat for yourself.

You'll get one $5 bonus card for every $25 in gift card purchases, regardless of the denomination. So, if you buy five $5 cards, you'll get one bonus card. Buy $100 worth of gift cards, and you'll get four $5 bonus cards.

But here's the catch: We only have a limited supply of bonus cards, and we can't make substitutions. So when they're gone, they're gone! Stop in to your local Eat'n Park today to get yours, then relax – holiday gift-giving doesn't get any easier than this!

*Bonus cards are only available at Eat'n Park restaurant locations while supplies last. This offer is not available with online gift card orders or e-gift cards. Bonus cards may be redeemed one per check from January 1 – March 31, 2014. Multiple bonus cards cannot be redeemed on the same check.

Celebrating 35 Years of our Caring for Kids Campaign

Since 1979, Eat'n Park guests and team members have united to do some serious fundraising for five weeks every November and December. That's right - it's time for Caring for Kids!  Through this campaign, we’ve raised more than $8.5 million for our local children’s hospitals, but we’re not stopping now!

Our 35th Annual Caring for Kids campaign kicks off today and we’ve got lots of fun opportunities for you to help support us this year!

$2 Raffle Tickets – 2014 Ford Fusion
Our generous partner, the Neighborhood Ford Store, has kindly donated a 2014 Ford Fusion to the campaign - so one lucky guest is going to be taking home a pretty nice Christmas present!

Raffle tickets are available for just $2 each at every Eat'n Park location. Just ask your server for one (or 10!) for your chance to win. 100% of the proceeds from the raffle go directly to the campaign.

For full details and raffle restrictions, click here.

Holiday Merchandise

10% of proceeds from all Holiday merchandise will go to our Caring for Kids campaign. You'll find mugs and magnets at every Eat'n Park location. In addition, restaurants that normally carry apparel will be featuring Christmas Star long sleeve t-shirts and Christmas Star ornaments!

Stop in to pick yours up today - we have limited quantities!

Pittsburgh Dad Smiley Cookies
This year we’ve also teamed up with a very special Pittsburgh icon – Pittsburgh Dad to offer limited edition Pittsburgh Dad Smiley Cookies at SmileyCookie.com. These exclusive, one of a kind cookies are the perfect gift for the “Pittsburgh Dad” in your life! Plus, 100% of the profits will benefit our Caring for Kids campaign! Be sure to order your cookies by December 19th to ensure delivery by Christmas.

Restaurant Activities
Every year, our team members pour their hearts into this campaign. Many of them donate their time (and sometimes, their tips) to organizing special events at our restaurants.

You may be familiar with our Tips for Tots nights, in which our team members and local celebrities voluntarily donate the evening's tips to the campaign. Events like these are fun for everyone, and of course, they benefit a great cause.

We'll be updating the schedule of events every week, so check back often to see what's happening at your local Eat'n Park!

Local Produce Ups and Downs

Summer has come to a close, and our local vegetable growers are happy to see it go. The start of the season had potential for being a great growing season; the weather was cooperating and farms were a week or two ahead of schedule.

That all changed on June 29th when we had a major thunderstorm that came up from the south and swept through Ohio, West Virginia and Western Pennsylvania. This storm flooded farmers' fields and brought in a favorable environment -moderately warm, humid, wet weather- for a pathogen called Phytophthora infestans. This pathogen is referred to as late blight, and it affects plants like potatoes and tomatoes.  Acres of crops can quickly fall victim.

Tomato plants showing signs of late blight
One of the prized jewels of our FarmSource program is our tomatoes. By mid July, farmers started to see signs of late blight affecting their tomato plants. Our primary grower for our slicing tomatoes is Brenckle's Farms and Greenhouses, and we got word from them that their first crop of tomatoes was totally wiped out by late blight. They wouldn't have tomatoes for us until their second harvest (mid-August), they said  three weeks after we normally have tomatoes available. Fortunately, not all of our local farms were affected by late blight and we able to have tomatoes as originally scheduled from Ohio partners like Weir Farms. Luckily for Brenckle's, growing conditions improved in late summer, and at my last visit, they had an abundance of healthy tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, and peppers.

Lettuce was also affected by the June storm. Two weeks prior, we were receiving beautiful heads of leaf lettuce from Yarnick's Farm in Indiana, PA. This lettuce was the first FarmSource produce item that we featured on the salad bar for 2013. Lettuce has always been sourced from California, and this was the first year it was sourced locally. Unfortunately, the storm I referred to earlier wiped out the entire crop, and our inaugural year of local lettuce was cut short.

The end of the growing season is coming to a close and though it was a challenging summer, we're happy to report that the farms that we purchase from made it through successfully. We're already working together to plan for 2014.We have some really creative local items in the queue for next year, so stay tuned!

Until next time,

Jamie

Checking In With Turner Dairy

One of our core partners within our FarmSource program is Turner Dairy. Back in 2007, they were the first dairy in western PA to eliminate rBGH from their milk supply. rBGH (recombinant bovine somatotropi) is a genetically engineered artificial hormone injected into dairy cows to make them produce more milk.

Turner’s continues to be a leader in the milk industry with their recent decision to eliminate high fructose corn syrup from their flavored milk, to be replaced with regular sugar. The transition from high-fructose corn syrup was a gradual one, as Turner’s focused on one product at a time to achieve a flavor profile that met their standards.  They started with their Whole Chocolate Milk, Fat Free Chocolate Milk, Fat Free Strawberry Milk and Fat Free Vanilla Milk. Each of these products underwent extensive testing throughout this transition to ensure that the award-winning flavors of each product were maintained.

Not only is Turner Dairy recognized locally for their great product, they also continue to garner awards for their milk on a national level. Most recently, Turner’s Fat Free Chocolate Milk won a “Gold Medal” at the 2013 Los Angeles International Dairy Competition and a “2nd Place Award” in the 2013 World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin. Turner’s Whole Chocolate Milk also won a “Gold Medal” at the 2013 Los Angeles International Dairy Competition.

We are proud to serve Turner’s locally-produced, high-quality milk at all of our restaurants.

Until next time,

Team Smiley Summer Recap

What a summer! Team Smiley and I had a great time meeting many new friends during our travels. And boy, did we put some miles on the ol’ Cookie Cruiser. Together we traveled over 1,900 miles and shared almost 50,000 Smiley Cookies in just 12 short weeks. We visited some really cool places, made some new friends, caught up with some old pals, celebrated birthdays and of course - smiled everywhere we went.

Thank you for making this summer so much fun!

And not to worry, I’ll be smiling in your neighborhoods all year long and hope to see you soon!

Our Promise: Fresh & Local

Fresh. Local. Hand-cut. Homemade. These are just a few of the adjectives used to describe a variety of our menu items. But seeing is believing, so here’s a behind the scenes look at some of our summer favorites.

First up is our Baked Chicken Bruschetta. This summer favorite features hand-breaded chicken, topped with our homemade bruschetta (using local tomatoes) and finished with a balsamic glaze and Asiago cheese.

Next is our FarmSource Veggie Soup. This seasonal soup features hand-cut cauliflower, green beans, local zucchini, yellow squash, and more. Plus it’s only 59 calories a cup!

Another summer favorite? Our Fruit Salad! We hand-cut six types of fruit: cantaloupe, honeydew, strawberries, bananas, pineapple, and watermelon, then add a scoop of sherbet or cottage cheese. YUM!

Hungry? We’ve got an app for that - our Hand-Breaded Zucchini! Fresh, local, hand-cut zucchinis dipped in our secret batter, hand-breaded, and fried to a golden perfection.

We also have a variety of homemade items on our new Soup, Salad, and Fruit Bar. Like our grilled marinated veggies available on Wednesdays. We hand-cut, marinate, and grill local zucchinis, yellow squash, mushrooms, and onions. Give them a try, you won’t be disappointed!
