Partner Spotlight: How Eat’n Park and United Way Create Change in the Community

Did you know Eat’n Park’s relationship with United Way dates back nearly three decades?

“Jim and Suzy [Broadhurst] served as United Way campaign chairs in the ‘90s, and that was just the beginning of a relationship that has had such a positive impact on our region,” says Bobbi Watt Geer, PhD, President & CEO, United Way of Southwestern PA.

At Eat’n Park, “Creating a Smile” means more than just a dining experience. It’s having an impact in the community in areas like food insecurity and helping families meet their basic needs every day, like through United Way’s 24/7/365 human services referral system, 211.

“A good partner is one who is consistently present and supportive in the ways the moment calls for,” continues Watt Geer. “When I consider the many ways Eat'n Park has worked with United Way to better serve the community, I am struck by the consistency, legacy, and commitment to creating and expanding goodness in people's lives.”

While Eat’n Park and United Way have been great partners for many years, the pandemic highlighted the importance of this connection and how it can directly impact local lives. As the United Way was faced with unanticipated urgent issues, one that quickly emerged was how students were going to access food without school breakfasts and lunches, and Eat’n Park had a solution.

“Brooks Broadhurst and the team at Eat'n Park were already thinking about this issue when they approached PNC Foundation and United Way to develop a network that would deliver meals to families,” said Watt Geer. “This idea blossomed into the Student and Family Food Program that engaged Eat'n Park and a number of other foodservice providers to deliver more than 1.5 million meals over the first two years of the pandemic. That's being a good neighbor and playing your part in making the region a better place to live."

Our 75th Anniversary Day was Filled with Smiles

Put it in the record books! Wednesday, June 5, 2024 was declared “Eat’n Park Day” by the City of Pittsburgh!

In honor of our 75th anniversary, government officials and community leaders turned out to celebrate the Place for Smiles at a very special event at our Banksville location.

Some of our team members wore Eat’n Park uniforms from yesteryear while we toasted to the future with milkshakes (the best way to toast, right?)!

We’re so honored to have been part of your breakfast, lunch, dinner, and more for the past 75 years, and we can’t wait to serve you Smiles for 75 more!

Meet Team Smiley 2024!

Hi, everyone! Team Smiley 2024 is officially underway, and we could not be more excited! This summer, we will be touring the great city of Pittsburgh and beyond with Smiley, attending sporting events, fairs, festivals, charity functions, and plenty of other fun events throughout the community. Driving in style in the Cookie Cruiser, spreading smiles, and handing out thousands of cookies every week will quickly become second nature for our team!

You can easily keep up with us and Smiley’s whereabouts by visiting the Find Smiley website. Where there’s Smiley, there’s lots of fun—including cookie decorating, exciting games, and Eat’n Park swag waiting to be won! Additionally, we encourage you to follow @enpteamsmiley on Instagram, where we will be posting weekly event recaps, fun story content, and of course, everything Smiley!

This summer, we are a team of five girls all just overflowing with positive energy and an eagerness to spread smiles across the community. We are so excited to make our rounds around Pittsburgh, get to meet everyone, and make some lifelong memories with our favorite cookie mascot! Let the summer begin!

You can get to know each of us better by reading our bios below!

Meet Katie:

Hi, everyone! My name is Katie, and I live about 30 minutes outside of Pittsburgh. I am a rising senior at University of Alabama, in the Honors College and studying Public Relations and Business. I love all things nature, being with friends, and working out at the gym. In my natural element, you can probably find me listening to my favorite music with an iced coffee in my hand. My order at Eat’n Park tends to be something sweet, whether it's a Smiley Belgian Waffle or Grilled Stickies. This summer, I am most excited to spend time with the girls, get to know the ins and outs of Eat’n Park, and connect with the community through the many events we will attend this summer.

Meet Breonna:
Hello, lovely people! My name is Breonna, and I currently live in Penn Hills, PA. I attend Penn State University where I am studying Marketing. This upcoming fall, I will be a junior, and I am excited for all it has in store for me. Eat’n Park has always had a special place in my heart, which drew me towards Team Smiley! When I was little, I also had a fair share of birthday parties at Eat’n Park. My favorite meal is the Classic Eat’n Park Chicken Salad with their homemade ranch! You can also never go wrong with a Superburger and fries.

As I work alongside Katie, Olivia, Sarah, and Emma, I am excited for all the networking opportunities, the professional development aspects, and the community engagement we get to participate in. I love seeing how much of an impact Eat’n Park has on our community, and I love that I can be a part of that. I am an art girl! I love to draw and do anything arts and crafts related. On Team Smiley, my peers and I have the opportunity to be creative, which makes it so much fun. I also enjoy reading, so feel free to share recommendations with me! When my days are completed from being on tour with Smiley, I love hanging out with my family and friends.

Meet Olivia:

Hi, everyone! My name is Olivia, and I live about 30 minutes outside the city of Pittsburgh! I will be a junior at Penn State University and am studying Marketing with a minor in Psychology. I am so excited to have the opportunity to create smiles in the community this summer with Eat’n Park, and my favorite meal is Herb Crusted Chicken with a Smiley Cookie! Other than Eat’n Park, I love going on walks with my dog, going to the gym, listening to music, and hanging out with family and friends! I am most excited to travel around Pittsburgh with Team Smiley creating smiles and fun digital content to share with everyone!

Meet Sarah:
Hi, everyone! My name is Sarah, and I am from right here in Pittsburgh! I am about 35 minutes outside the city! I am currently going into my senior year at Penn State University studying Advertising with a focus/minor in Digital Media Trends and Analytics. My favorite thing about Eat’n Park is obviously the Smiley Cookies, because who doesn't love a sweet treat! In my free time, I enjoy being with my sisters and family, along with hanging out with my friends. I have been a dancer since I was young, and still enjoy dancing with my team in college! I love trying new things, meeting new people, and appreciating the little things in life. I am beyond excited for this internship on Team Smiley and am especially eager to attend the different types of Pittsburgh events with my awesome team! I am looking forward to the countless connections I will be making within the Pittsburgh area to really further my career! I hope to see everyone at an event this summer!

Meet Emma:
Hi, friends! My name is Emma, and I live right around the corner in South Park, PA! I am eager to begin my senior year at Slippery Rock University with a dual concentration in Integrated Marketing Communication and Public Relations. Additionally, I recently began pursuing a certificate in Intercultural Communication. When I am not spending time with Team Smiley or Smiley himself, you will find me trying out a new coffee shop, spending time outside with my family, or lifting at the gym! As a breakfast fanatic, I am obsessed with Eat n Park’s Blueberry Pancakes—with a fresh cup of coffee, of course! I am so excited to spend my summer spreading smiles and making memories with my Cruiser teammates by my side!

We cannot wait to impact our community in a way that’s bigger than all of us! We hope to see everyone at one of our events! Keep up to date with us on our social media, @enpteamsmiley on Instagram. Keep smiling and have a nice day!

A Message from our Chairman & CEO, Jeff Broadhurst

The year was 1949.

“Riders in the Sky (A Cowboy Legend)” was at the top of the music charts. The Stratton Story starring Indiana, Pa.’s own Jimmy Stewart was the No. 1 film. And restauranteur Larry Hatch was about to do something extraordinary...he just didn’t know it yet.

On June 5, 1949, Hatch introduced Pittsburgh to its first “Come as You Are, Eat In Your Car” experience known as “Eat’n Park,” located in a tiny, two-tone yellow, 13-seat restaurant in the South Hills. The restaurant opened at 2 PM that day, and soon guests rushed the Saw Mill Run Boulevard location, causing a traffic jam on Route 51. By 8 PM, the restaurant was out of food, with just hours to spare before they had to do it all over again the next day.

And that’s just what Larry Hatch and his resilient team did.

Guarded with a willingness to listen and anticipate guests’ needs, they opened and set out to make a better tomorrow. While my father, former Chairman and CEO Jim Broadhurst, wouldn’t introduce the Smiley Cookie for another 37 years, the desire to Create a Smile has always been there, even on that opening day.

Today, Eat’n Park celebrates its 75th anniversary, and we wouldn’t be here without our community. While we specialize in food, our restaurants start with people. That’s what’s kept us in business for more than seven decades.

Just like our Sauce Supreme adds something extra special to our Superburger, the same can be said for our incredible team members and the guests we serve. Our team members have been willing to take risks and try new ideas with us, all while creating Smiles, and you, our guests, have stood by us and become our family. We’re who we are today because of the Pittsburgh community who took a chance on us on Saw Mill Run Boulevard all those years ago.

As we’ve evolved and grown, Eat’n Park memories look different for each generation, and I can’t wait to see what new ones will take shape.

Thank you for 75 years. We look forward to spreading Smiles for 75 more!

Jeff
