The Holiday Season Starts with the Eat'n Park Christmas Star Commercial
It’s that time of year...time for our Christmas Star commercial! Every year, we are moved by the comments we hear about this classic spot. Many of you have told us that it is what gets you in the holiday spirit, and that it reminds you of what the holidays are all about. We’ve even heard the commercial has been referenced in Christmas Eve sermons!
Retelling the story of the “Christmas Star” has become an annual tradition for us, kind of like reading “The Night Before Christmas” for many families. So just how did this classic come to be?
It all started in early 1982. Eat’n Park was just beginning to blossom into the family restaurant chain you’re now familiar with, and the company was prospering. Our CEO at the time, Jim Broadhurst, wanted to create a holiday card on video to thank the city of Pittsburgh for their support of Eat’n Park and our Caring for Kids campaign for local children’s hospitals, which at the time, was just a few years old.
So, Jim tasked Ketchum, our ad agency at the time, with creating a message that would “last for 20 years.” Easy, right? Craig Otto, then a young art director, and Cathy Bowen, a fledgling copywriter at the time, led the project. The pair worked for 3 weeks to generate over 30 ideas, none of which were met with approval. Eventually, they hit upon the idea of an animated commercial, but they still weren’t sure where they were going with it.
One Sunday shortly thereafter, Craig decided to come into the office. He sketched out a star, a traditional holiday image, and then stopped. “How does the star get to the top of the tree?” He played around with a few ideas until deciding that, of course, the star would need some help from the tree itself. In a fateful coincidence, Cathy had also decided to come into the office that Sunday. So, while Craig worked out the illustrations, Cathy devised a simple, yet perfect sentiment to wrap up the commercial.
Jim immediately loved the spot, and a timeless classic was born. Even better, the commercial has outlasted his original expectations. The idea of the relationship between the tree and the star illustrates an enduring holiday lesson – by helping one another, you’re making the world a brighter place.
So, from everyone here at Eat’n Park, here’s hoping the special lift you get this holiday season lasts all year long!
Read on to see when it will be airing on TV in the Pittsburgh area!

Collier Township Eat’n Park Opens with Expanded Space, Pickup Window, & Salad Bar
It's finally here!
After seven months of closure and construction, our BRAND-NEW Collier Township Eat’n Park is open on Washington Pike! Back in April, we knocked down the old location — built in 1956! — and replaced it with a new and improved building in the same spot!
Eat’n Park Project Manager Rachel Cooper says it’s been so much fun to watch the area go from rubble to restaurant.
“From moving out almost 9,000 cubic yards of dirt to pouring the slab, it’s surreal,” says Rachel. “Even seeing it now, it looks so amazing!”
What’s New at Collier Township Eat’n Park?
The brand-new space includes an expanded back of house for team members, better parking, a Pickup Window, and. . . . *drum roll please*. . . the return of the Salad Bar, which has been closed for nearly five years! Eat’n Park not only brought it back, but they also made it better. The new Salad Bar is now double-sided to serve more guests!
General Manager Elliot Feschuk says there’s a lot that goes into building a restaurant from scratch, and he would know — he’s been with the company for 24 years, starting as a dishwasher at 15 before going to culinary school and working his way up to GM through Eat’n Park’s Management Training Program.
“There are things you take for granted,” says Elliot. “You look around and think, ‘I guess we have to order the little pie signs!’ Everything is new! And we’ve hired so many great new team members. A lot of times you hire one or two at a time, and we were able to hire 60!”
Yep, 60 NEW team members! Rachel and Elliot believe both new and returning team members will love the new back-of-house setup.
“Sandy, one of our long-term team members, cried when we closed, just because of the history,” says Rachel. “I saw her yesterday, and she was in happy tears. She’s so excited she has this space to cook in and be proud of in Collier Township, so she can make new memories.”
“The team members are ecstatic!” says Elliot. “The old back of house was not user-friendly and a lot to work around. The new one is much more spacious!”
Salad Bar, Pickup Window, and New Parking at Collier Township Eat’n Park
When it comes to amenities guests will be excited for, Rachel and Elliot agree the Salad Bar is something to behold.
“Anyone who has stopped by, from vendors to construction, they always mention the Salad Bar!” says Rachel.
“The old one was hidden away in the back of the corner,” says Elliot. “This one has so much more room for guests!”
Another perk for guests is the parking lot. The old parking area was a bit intense and narrow; this one is perfect for takeout and busy guests on the go.
“It’s so much more convenient for families,” Rachel. “The layout of the parking lot flows much better to get in, get out, and get through the Pickup Window!”
Most of all, both Rachel and Elliot are thrilled for what the Collier Township Eat’n Park will bring to the community.
“There aren’t a lot of family restaurant options around here,” says Rachel, “and Eat’n Park wanted to invest back into this community with an updated restaurant for families. After all, where else can kids leave with a free Smiley Cookie?”
Place an order today to try the NEW Pickup Window at Collier Township Eat'n Park!

Evolution of Eat'n Park Desserts
Can you imagine life without Eat’n Park desserts? It’s just not as sweet (or delicious)! For decades, we've been honored to be your dessert destination after high school football games, movies, shows, and more!
And our desserts have evolved over the years, starting with our Strawberry Pie that our founder’s daughter, Claire Moore, perfected in her Scott Township kitchen in 1954!
Filled with two pints of strawberries, Strawberry Pie was monumental for a variety of reasons, but one of them includes Eat’n Park being one of the first places to ever receive fresh strawberries by air freight. In 1962, the Strawberry Pie was served in the winter by shipping strawberries from Plant City, Florida.

Team Smiley 2024, Signing off!
Hello, everyone! Team Smiley 2024 is officially signing off!
This summer was filled with countless smiles, laughs, and memories. Thank you for keeping up with us on Team Smiley’s Instagram @enpteamsmiley! These past few months have been such an amazing experience, and this internship is one that is truly unlike any other.
With over 1,300 miles traveled (about half the width of the United States), 34,000 Smiley Cookies distributed, and an infinite amount of Smiles shared, we have certainly kept ourselves busy! Every single event we traveled to had an impact on our community in a special way, and we wouldn’t trade it for the world! The amount of people we met at new places we discovered in the Pittsburgh area is something we will carry with us in our careers!
With countless memories and lessons learned, here are a few of our most invaluable takeaways from our Team Smiley 2024 experience!
Seeing your smiling faces when receiving or decorating a Smiley Cookie is an image we will never leave behind! Knowing we brought so many people happiness touched our hearts.
Being on Team Smiley this summer was also extra special because we were able to contribute to the 75th anniversary celebrations! We brought the Cookie Cruiser to special 75th anniversary partnerships, including the Eat’n Park takeover at the Pirates Game, the Heinz History Center Kids Free weekend, and the Carnegie Science Center’s new Pixar exhibit sponsored by Eat’n Park. The celebrations never stopped all summer, and we were so glad to play a part in creating Smiles!
We were so appreciative of Eat’n Park Hospitality Group for giving us the opportunity to work both in and out of the office. This internship meant so much more than being stuck behind a desk because of our ability to work independently at our Cookie Cruiser events.
Continuing this gratefulness, our Cookie Cruiser events brought us even closer to our hometown, Pittsburgh, PA. As we traveled with cookies and smiles across the region, we discovered the city has a lot of wonderful qualities, more than we ever knew! Without our internship with Eat’n Park, we might have never reignited our passion for the City of Pittsburgh!
Last, but certainly not least, we are taking our friendship far beyond our Team Smiley internship days. Spending the summer together created some of the best memories we've ever had! Without our camaraderie and strong connection, this internship might not have been as unbelievably successful and rewarding. Our greatest advice to future Team Smiley interns is to appreciate those around you and make genuine connections whenever the opportunity presents itself. Making memories is one thing but making them with your best friends is the greatest feeling in the world.
Thank you all for following along with us this summer!
Team Smiley 2024 Signing Off! Eat’n Park forever!
- Olivia, Sarah, Katie, Emma, and Bre
