Partner Spotlight of the Month: March of Dimes

Every month here on our blog, we'll be highlighting one of our non-profit partnerships. This month, learn a little more about the March of Dimes.


Ever since the days of Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s presidency, the March of Dimes has been working tirelessly to improve the health of babies born everyday. They do this by funding important research on problems that threaten unborn babies and cause premature birth or birth defects. The March of Dimes also provides community programs and education so that moms can have healthy, happy, and full-term pregnancies. When there are trials and tribulations, the March of Dimes can offer support, comfort, and information.

At Eat’n Park, we know that babies and children are our not only the future leaders of tomorrow, but also the vibrancy of our families and communities. It’s important to us to take care of kids in our neighborhoods (and we do mean kids of ALL ages). That’s why Eat’n Park is a proud supporter of our local March of Dimes chapters, working together for stronger, healthier babies.

This year, you’ll see purple Smiley Cookies at 13 March of Dimes-sponsored walks throughout the Pennsylvania and Ohio areas. These walks demonstrate the commitment to healthier families and babies and are an opportunity for teams to celebrate, honor, and remember the babies who have touched their lives.

Spring Farm Tour: Planting Day at Brenckle’s

On March 28th, I visited Brenckle’s Farm in Renfrew, PA. This farm visit wasn’t like my other visits – this time, I had 50 others join me! The 50 others were hourly and management team members (employees) from our restaurants. Our team members truly have a passion for food, and they were just as excited as I always am to get out and spend some time with a local partner like Brenckle’s.

We arrived at 9:30 AM with the wind blowing and clouds of rain overhead. We were greeted by Don, Gary, Gary Jr. and Greg Brenckle. Our objective was to plant tomato plants and pickling cucumbers in their newly constructed three-acre hoophouse. A hoop house is a greenhouse with a plastic roof wrapped over flexible piping, which helps extend the growing season by two extra months (one month earlier and one month later in the season). Unfortunately, due to high winds, the hoophouse hadn’t been fully covered in plastic yet. However, that didn’t mean we were off the hook – Don and his family found other ways to put us to work!

We decided to split the group up into two; one to plant zucchini and the other to transplant pepper plants. Our zucchini group got to work planting the zucchinis from seed. There were rows and rows of black plastic mounds, which help to keep weeds at bay. Gary Jr. drove a tractor that made holes in the plastic. Our team members then placed one seed in each hole, then covered it back up. It sounds easy, but we had to be careful not to lose track of where we planted each seed! After only a few hours, the group planted over 7,000 zucchini, which you can expect to see in our restaurants in a few months.

Our pepper group was equally productive. It’s still too soon to plant peppers outside, so our team members were given the task of transplanting trays of 100 pepper seedlings into larger trays that held 24 seedlings each. Greg Brenckle explained that it’s important to give the seedlings more room to grow; otherwise, when they’re transplanted to the field, they won’t be able to produce a large enough root system to survive. By the end of the day, we had transplanted over 18,000 pepper plants!

After all of our hard work, we enjoyed a gourmet lunch of hamburgers and hot dogs, which was a perfect end to a great day!

Eat'n Park Hospitality Group 2012 Volunteer of the Year

Volunteering is a big part of our corporate culture at Eat’n Park. Because we’re in the hospitality business, we like to extend a helping hand and friendly smile beyond our four walls and into the neighborhoods we serve.

Because of this, we encourage our team members to get active in their communities and we like to show our appreciation when they do so. One of the ways we acknowledge our company’s outstanding volunteers is through an awards program in partnership with the Jefferson Awards for Public Service.

We are proud to announce the 2012 Eat’n Park Hospitality Group Volunteer of the Year: Charlie Guttendorf!

Charlie is a Retail Supervisor for Parkhurst at Bucknell University. Parkhurst is part of our onsite brands division, which serves colleges and universities, corporations, and cultural centers. Charlie was nominated for his work with the Community Harvest Program in Milton, PA, which provides 150 to 200 hot meals to needy families on a weekly basis. Because Charlie works to provide fresh, healthy meals to his guests every day, he also feels an obligation to make sure that his neighbors in Milton are being served fresh, healthy meals too.

Charlie will be representing Eat’n Park Hospitality Group this June at the National Ceremony for the Jefferson Awards for Public Service. The Jefferson Awards were established in 1972 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, U.S. Senator Robert Taft, Jr. and Sam Beard as the "Nobel Prize" for Public Service. Today, the mission of the Jefferson Awards is to "recognize, inspire and activate volunteerism and public service in communities, workplaces and schools across America." Eat’n Park Hospitality Group is one of the 30 corporations from around the nation who has joined with the Jefferson Awards as a Corporate Champion partner to energize volunteerism within the work place.
