Our Promise: Fresh & Local

Fresh. Local. Hand-cut. Homemade. These are just a few of the adjectives used to describe a variety of our menu items. But seeing is believing, so here’s a behind the scenes look at some of our summer favorites.

First up is our Baked Chicken Bruschetta. This summer favorite features hand-breaded chicken, topped with our homemade bruschetta (using local tomatoes) and finished with a balsamic glaze and Asiago cheese.

Next is our FarmSource Veggie Soup. This seasonal soup features hand-cut cauliflower, green beans, local zucchini, yellow squash, and more. Plus it’s only 59 calories a cup!

Another summer favorite? Our Fruit Salad! We hand-cut six types of fruit: cantaloupe, honeydew, strawberries, bananas, pineapple, and watermelon, then add a scoop of sherbet or cottage cheese. YUM!

Hungry? We’ve got an app for that - our Hand-Breaded Zucchini! Fresh, local, hand-cut zucchinis dipped in our secret batter, hand-breaded, and fried to a golden perfection.

We also have a variety of homemade items on our new Soup, Salad, and Fruit Bar. Like our grilled marinated veggies available on Wednesdays. We hand-cut, marinate, and grill local zucchinis, yellow squash, mushrooms, and onions. Give them a try, you won’t be disappointed!

Stop by your local Eat’n Park today to enjoy these tasty creations – our Baked Chicken Bruschetta, FamrSource Veggie Soup, and Fruit Salad will only be available until September 15th!

Big Fun at the Big Reach Center of Hope Back to School Bash!

Hi friends, it’s Smiley, and I’m back from another great weekend with my team. On Saturday morning, we traveled to Salem, Ohio to join the Big Reach Center of Hope for their Back to School Bash, and we had such a great time!

The Big Reach Center of Hope holds this event  annually, and provides school supplies, clothing, haircuts, food, and fun to local families in need. They run an amazing outreach program that helps so many people. Of course, we provided lots of Smiley Cookies for the occasion! Guests could decorate their own cookies and take pre-decorated cookies home for their families.

Big Reach Center of Hope Back to School Bash
There were plenty of fun things for me to do at the Back to School Bash. I met Max, the face of the Big Reach, as well as the penguins from Youngstown State University.

My new friends, Max and the Penguins
There was also a petting zoo, where I met a baby kangaroo and a baby camel.

I love animals!
The highlight of my day was riding down the inflatable slide, which I don’t always get to do since I am a pretty round cookie! I loved posing for pictures with some of my new friends at Big Reach and I am so glad that my team and I were able to help out and give back to such an amazing cause.

Summer Farm Tour – Brenckle’s Farm and Greenhouses

On July 17th, a humid, 93-degree day, I had an opportunity to take a few of our employees out to Brenckle’s, one of the local farms that we partner with through our FarmSource program.

Our team members at Brenckle's Farm
Brenckle’s has been a long standing partner of ours, and two years ago they won Eat’n Park Hospitality Group’s “Supplier of the Year”. They are great farmers and grow some unbelievable vegetables for us like tomatoes, zucchini, squash, peppers, eggplant, cabbage and cucumbers.

When we visited the Brenckle’s last  year, we had an opportunity to get into the fields and help them with planting. This year we decided to go a little later in the season and assist with harvesting, packing and other odd jobs that needed to be done around the farm. We started by harvesting cucumbers and zucchinis. The zucchinis are currently being used in our restaurants for our hand-breaded zucchini appetizer and our FarmSource Veggie Soup.

Fresh, local zucchini used in our restaurants
Unfortunately, the cucumbers we picked were only for farm stands – the pickling cucumbers used in our restaurants were not ready yet.

We also helped the Brenckle’s pick blueberries! Although we don’t currently use Brenckle’s blueberries in our restaurants, Gary Brenckle gave the green light to two of our employees to pick a few berries, and within 10 minutes, everyone else had somehow found their way into the blueberry patch.

Picking blueberries
As we continue to work with the Brenckles, it’s nice to see the next generation slowly taking on the responsibilities of running the farm. Gary and Don Brenckle are both looking to relinquish their farming responsibilities to their sons, Greg and Gary. The younger two Brenckles are working on taking the family farm to another level.  They recently got their farm GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) certified. Completing their GAP certification is a great investment, and it will help them in readying their farm for the future.

After we got done with the farm chores we all sat down on the loading dock and had lunch. We had turkey, beef and veggie burgers, grilled vegetables from the farm, potato salad and cucumber salad that was prepared by me (I hate to toot my own horn, but the food was pretty good). We also had a chance to try some of Gary Sr.’s homemade salsas and pickled peppers that he canned last year. All of them were really good, but my personal favorite was the shredded Cubanella peppers that were submerged in olive oil and oregano.

Grilled yellow squash for lunch
Remember this is the time of year that local produce is at the height of the season. Take advantage of it while it lasts and stop in to see what local produce Eat’n Park will be featuring each week.

Until next time,

Jamie

Cruising, Cars, and Cookies

Hi, everyone! Team Smiley and I spent last weekend having lots of fun in the Pittsburgh neighborhoods. Sunday, we were at the  South Park Township Rev’ Em Up Kids Car Cruise. The Cookie Cruiser stood out amongst all of the other antique vehicles on show! I strolled through the rows and rows, pausing every so often for photo opportunities, which included a trolley, a race car, and a tiny European two seater!

Then, I ventured into the kids area where I came upon an inflatable slide! Unfortunately I found out it wasn’t designed for cookies my size, but I loved seeing all the kids slide down it. Team Smiley and I also discovered the face painting station, balloon creations, galloping horses, and my good friends, the Pirate Parrot and Iceberg the Penguin were there, too!

I had such a wonderful time at this event! Hope to see you next weekend. Click here to see where I’ll be and find us on twitter at @enpteamsmiley!
